“It didn’t feel like the end of the year,” India MacDonell stated. “It felt like the end of the world.”

At 19, MacDonell was amongst those that selected to remain and attempt to shield their houses when wildfires engulfed a lot of southeastern Australia in late 2019 and early 2020. She recorded all the things, offering a harrowing view of what it’s like to face nose to nose with an aggravated Mom Nature.

A lot of the destruction performed out over the vacations, when scorching, dry climate and robust winds touched off tons of of bush fires at a time when Aussies are normally enjoyable over a summer time break.

Some folks have been trapped on seashores, surrounded by fireplace and staring up at a plume of smoke that measured as broad as Europe. Dan Rutherford, a father of younger youngsters on household trip, was amongst them.

“We’re still trying to work it out in our heads what happened,” he stated. “It worries me immensely that my children may have to go through this experience again.”
